Rina Sawayama is Everyone’s “LUCID” Dream girl
The pop artist’s latest single is the sweetest of dreams
Wake up, wake up! Heavy sleeper? Then you might have missed that rising pop sensation Rina Sawayama dropped her new single “LUCID” late last month. Yes, even after she gifted the world with the album of the year, Sawayama, in April (The Recording Academy is not seeing the pearly gates of heaven for that Grammy nom snub)! The surprise drop has Pixels around the globe tossing and turning in their beds, in the best way possible.
The track is superbly dreamy, dancey, and damn-good. It’s addictive hook is sure to keep you up all night, and the not-shy queer yearning of the pre-chorus (“Hey girl, you are what I’ve been looking for…hey girl, you are what I’ve been dreaming of.”) cements “LUCID” as a queer dance party playlist go-to.
Sawayama premiered a music video (or rather an Extended Reality Video) to accompany the single this Friday. It stars two versions of the singer: one normal, one high fashion, both serving. Highly saturated animated dreamscapes and colorful effects serve as the backdrop. In the behind-the-scenes look at the making of the music video, Sawayama spills a fun little detail about what “LUCID” is really about: “The song is like a queer masturbation song? [laughs] It genuinely, actually is.” Well, I can’t think of a better reason to stream this masterpiece!
This whole surprise wraps up her year quite nicely, especially since the release of the deluxe version of Sawayama also dropped on Friday. (“Bees & Honey” enthusiasts, stand up!) But who knows, we still have a full month of 2020 left — Miss Sawayama could have another treat up her sleeve…like another single to ring in the new year perhaps? In any case, wake me up if something happens. I’ll be lucid dreaming in the meantime.
